GRADES are important, but if a student lacks interpersonal or independent skills, they would not progress in order to contribute to the development of the country.
This was said by the Acting Director of the School Inspectorate at the Ministry of Education (MoE), Tan Lian Lian yesterday, during an award ceremony at Sayyidina Hasan Secondary School.
The school awarded 193 of its students for their outstanding achievement in last year's 'O' Level examination.
Speaking to The Brunei Times, the acting director stated that the event can be considered as one of the school's initiatives towards improving the students' achievement.
She said that "by recognising not only the best but the most improved", it would give a message to the other students that schools are no longer looking at students who are achieving As but also those who have improved.
Also present was the school's principal, Hj Metusin Hj Jais, who stated that the number of students who have five 'O' level credits in 2011 compared to the previous year has increased by 1.07 per cent.
"In 2010, the percentage of students who achieved five 'O' level credits and above is 37.58 per cent, while in 2011 it has increased to 38.65 percent," the principal revealed.
He stated that the number of students accepted into sixth form centres has also increased by 18.75 per cent, from 112 in 2010 to 133 in 2012.
"This is the highest percentage increase of students pursuing their 'A' levels," said the principal.
He also commended the 66 students who failed their qualifying examination but managed to obtain credits in their 'O' level examination, as well as the 155 students who achieved passes in the qualifying examinations but achieved credits in their 'O' level examination. "The undeniable success of these students depends a lot on their teachers' guidance and the parent's role and contribution in ensuring their children are always focused on learning," he said. He urged this year's Year 11 students to step up their efforts and to cooperate with their teachers in order to achieve the desired success. The Brunei Times

Top three 'O' level students share success story
by Anna Abu Bakar
BRUNEI-MUARA
Thursday, April 12, 2012
"PRACTISE makes perfect" is a key ingredient in achieving very good 'O' Level exam results.
This was stated by three top students who were awarded for their outstanding GCE 'O' Level results at Sayyidina Hasan Secondary School.
The students, in an interview with The Brunei Times, expressed their joy, especially Mohd Fa'ezul Fitri Latif, who said his results were "unexpected".
He hopes to pursue a future in engineering and expressed his utmost gratitude to his parents, who constantly advised him that academic success would eventually lead to a much greater success in his future.
His father, Latif Hj Hamdan, stated that Fa'ezul did not want to attend extra tuition classes because what is taught there differ from what the school teaches.
He also stressed on the parent's role in guiding and nurturing their children, particularly in time management, so they would know when to study and play.
As a parent, he believes that "children, in general, need guidance" and is grateful that his son is always willing to listen to any guidance offered.
For 17-year-old Martin Yi Jun Fung, he shared that his parents "played a huge role with double expectations" towards his 8 O' Levels. His mother, Stephanie Yong, who runs a tutorial school, is satisfied with her son's results, although he needs "an occasional push" but would often "lock himself in his room" to do some independent study.
Another recipient, Goh Jia Yih, expressed her appreciation to her teachers, particularly her Additional Maths teacher, who played an equally important role as her parents for "drilling" her to practise with past year papers.
She said the teachers were very careful with planning as they quickly finished their syllables two to three months in advance to allow the students to concentrate on past year papers and prepare for personal revision.
When The Brunei Times enquired Leong Yat San, a computer teacher, about the source behind the students' success, he said that a good teaching strategy is important in motivating the students. He further emphasised that a student usually has to like a subject and connect what they have learnt in their every day lives to help them become better students. The Brunei Times
